I worked on a Biodynamics farm for 6 months, but that was my only first-hand experience.

Quadrant cycling is best. Most crops leech the land dry. Beans and peanuts and legumes are nitrogen fixers. Sheep or goats are excellent small space animals for cycling.
 
1,2,3,4,1,2,3 4,etc.
 
If you have 10 acres you can cycle 2 acre plots, while having 2 acres of orchard/perennial/pond/homestead space.
 
Field 1. Crops
Field 2. Beans and peanuts
Field 3. Fallow
Field 4. Sheep or goats
 
Cycle every year.
