Been building my duck herd. This will bring us to 20 ducks. Hope to sell the duck eggs at the farm stand for twice what I charge for chicken eggs. Right now we sell chicken eggs and eat the duck eggs mostly, but hopefully soon we will be overwhelmed with both. 50 chickens and 20 ducks seems like a good number for now.

Good stuff. Duck eggs are good to eat and even better for baking. Do you raise any birds for meat, chicken or duck?

We butcher chickens but to be honest the ducks are just too cute. I mean I could eat them sure but chickens I like to butcher ducks are sweethearts

Duck is tasty and rendered duck fat is valuable.

Always liked my chickens more. They're cleaner. Ducks can be a shit festival.

i've heard ducks are harder to upkeep than chickens, is that true? i want to get 1 chicken to start with. i will likely keep it indoors, way too hot outside and also HOA.

Ducks

Pros:
Easy to grow big. They are born bigger than chickens and eat less and grow fast. Do not need as warm conditions as chickens.

Cons:
They love water. They love to play in it, spread it. Turn it into mud. They use 10x more water than chickens. That is it

If you are starting out, i recommend chickens.

Only exception might be is if you already have ponds or bodies of water nearby on the property.

What are the benefits of keeping ducks as a domestic animal? Everyone here always raise chickens but I’ve heard of people rescuing ducks and geese.

They are very antisemitic and will protect your property from jews and gypsies.

You can sell the eggs for twice as much as chicken eggs. And they lay a lot, including more into the Winter as they thrive in cold weather that chickens would not. They love to be wet and don't mind snow. They seem to eat less grain too, as they forage mostly.

Also their eggs are healthier and better for baking. Larger yolks and more minerals

Interesting to hear about these ducks. I’ll keep them in mind if I ever get land.

I prefer chickens but here is a good argument for ducks

Why Ducks are Better than Chickens for a Backyard Homestead
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TJfHSp0b0lU

1. Number of eggs. Ducks lay more and for longer (more years)

2. Nutrition. Duck eggs more nutritious, larger, more of them.

3. Duck meat is supposedly better. higher protein more fat more calories. tastes more like red meat than chicken.

4. Hardiness. ducks can withstand hotter, colder temps. the duck eggs are easier to incubate. Ducks withstand disease better, ducks clean in water whereas chickens take dust baths.

5. pest control. Ducks eat weeds, grubs, snails. Chickens wont eat snails, but do eat grubs sometimes. Chickens scratch up the ground which can be a pain. duck manure supposedly breaks down quicker for compost whereas chicken manure usually takes a year to break down as a garden compost. Ducks make more manure.

What are duck eggs like?

Larger yolk, slightly less white part. If you didn't tell me it was a duck egg I probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

Huh, now I’m curious to try one. They don’t lay as often as chickens tho, right?

They can lay MORE than chickens actually...

>Khaki Campbell can lay 300 eggs per year.

If you ever have children, consider including raw egg yolks in their diet. The saturated fats and cholesterol in raw yolks support optimal brain development, helping them reach their full genetic potential—potentially reducing the risk of autism and enhancing intelligence. Additionally, the fat-soluble vitamins contribute to overall physical development, promoting height, strength, and even natural beauty.
