Why Ducks are Better than Chickens for a Backyard Homestead

1. Number of eggs. Ducks lay more and for longer (more years)
2. Nutrition. Duck eggs more nutritious, larger, more of them.
3. Duck meat is supposedly better. higher protein more fat more calories. tastes more like red meat than chicken.
4. Hardiness. ducks can withstand hotter, colder temps. the duck eggs are easier to incubate. Ducks withstand disease better, ducks clean in water whereas chickens take dust baths.
5. pest control. Ducks eat weeds, grubs, snails. Chickens wont eat snails, but do eat grubs sometimes. Chickens scratch up the ground which can be a pain. duck manure supposedly breaks down quicker for compost whereas chicken manure usually takes a year to break down as a garden compost. Ducks make more manure.
