A penny is worth almost nothing at this point, thanks to the debasement of currency, and each one minted is a net loss. Rather than destroy the penny, why don't we fix the money?
I have a small collection of Norwegian crown pennies, one of those is worth roughly $0.001. Only thing you could purchase with those was a single piece of candy back in the 50's. Looking at one of them now out of nostalgia I noticed that those essentially worthless coins also have ridges. Somewhere, at some point, a jew was carving the ridges of coins worth 1/10 of a penny. This was back in the days when the monetary value was still higher than the price of the raw material. 🤡🌎

I doubt it. Removing a low denomination, or reintroducing a higher one (like the 500- or 1000-dollar note) makes a powerful statement that can't be taken back. It'll lock into the American mind just how bad inflation has become. Losing a coin we've had (the small cent) since 1856 is big news.
when obsolete penny discussion was going on 25 years ago, i remember hearing there was a lobby for the zinc industry that paid off the right senators to keep the penny gravy train going
