Most people are happy with getting a deal. Jews are happy with getting a deal if they think they are screwing over the other person in the process.
It's how they deal with God. They have all sorts of loopholes around doing stuff on the Sabbath. They like thinking they are "tricking" God. On Fridays during Lent, some Christians abstain from eating meat. So we have fish frys in the church basement. Jews would do something like go eat whale meat and claim it qualifies as a culinary fish.
Orthodox lent forbids eating meat from an animal with a backbone. So fish and and land animals are off the table. But orthodoxy allows you to eat shellfish and mollusks just as well. Although a lot of orthodox forego any meat at all.
Or, more analogous, Jews in that scenario would pre-cook their steak dinner the night before and claim "eating" is the full act of both cooking+consuming, so if they aren't cooking it that day, it is not considered eating. If they forgot, they would hire a white guy to cook it for them.
