I recently saw a list of the most attractive male hobbies (maybe if this screenshot is recent, it is from the same study or whatever), and it listed the most attractive habit as reading books. Writing was up there, too. Made me think about the old adage on why men invented art.

My least favorite thing about right wing internet is how people shift mountains and oceans in their minds in order to justify hating their own women at all times. Guys who read actual books up their sexy factor because they are doing something old school that takes mental effort and that utilizes and feeds their brain. It shows that they are still willing to do something traditional that many people have abandoned. That appeals to me because I prefer guys who still find value in traditional things that most of society has abandoned. Which books they read could definitely have a factor in how I viewed them though. If they were reading The Communist Manifesto for enjoyment I might not find them so appealing.
It also allows you to appeal to them with a bit of borrowed or internalized personality from some of smoothest minds of all time, and to relate to them on an individual level as fans of some author or another. Imagine not having to do normal first date small talk because one of the million stories floating in your mind happens to be a direct key to her heart. Hopefully that key is not Harry Potter, though.
Yes. Common ground and a meeting of the minds is one of the most attractive things you can find. Men who read tend to be able to have intellectual conversations and even if you don't completely agree, finding a guy who you can have a little friendly debate with without anyone getting all bent out of shape is amazing. For me intellect, integrity, and determination are way more important than what a man has externally. I would like to think most other women agree but unfortunately I think a lot of modern women care most about a man's looks and career than anything else.

I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with fiction, or even escapism to an extent, especially considering the world we live in. It's good to be able to play out the role of a selfless hero, brave adventurer, or skilled operator in scenarios where those are considered positive, even if you're not actually doing those things.
Kids, in particular, need something to aspire to and they're so lacking in real world role models that even adults are unable to chose a good direction. At least if they're playing a character who helps every village they come across, or boldly steps into the unknown, or constantly masters new ideas and abilites, they've got a template for what they should strive for in the real world.

You're no longer playing a pillar of society, you're a thief, a thug, an assassin, or "just surviving" a world with no moral standards. No different from living your regular life except the risk is removed; true escapism.
On top of that, the adventuring has been replaced with quest markers and competence replaced with ease of use and "skill based" matchmaking. Outside a few gems, there's nothing even to get good at.
