Spirit is their worst album. Depeche mode are my favorite band though and their lyrics are very profound. Piece of lyric from stripped:

The problems started when they lost Alan Wilder who really was the "musician" of the band. He did a masterful job basically co-producting Music For The Masses, Violator and Songs of Faith and Devotion. After that they lost a lot of his magic. Martin's a great songwriter but he needs the great arrangements of Alan.
