There's a lot of talk of the "obesity epidemic" and this is often discussed in scientific terms, about "counting calories" to lose weight, or fad weight loss diets (which can work), or just "exercising more and eating less"

But I've thought from time to time that maybe this is more of a spiritual problem of the sin of gluttony, and as such it may not be as easily solved by self-will and discipline, but by the grace of God through people undergoing holy fasts for the good of soul and body

What do you think about the spiritual dimension of the "obesity epidemic", or the traditional idea of the sin of gluttony?

It is an addiction, and for most people is all about sugar. Sugar is as addictive as cocaine when tested in mice. The US consumes the most sugar per capita in the world. 25% more than the 2nd highest consumer (Germany). The production like everything is also highly corrupt as you can see on the Netflix show "Rotten" episode "Sugar".

Whenever I go on keto, the first few days of not eating anything with sugar or simple carbs are awful.

Obesity is a consequence of the following :

aboundance + ignorance, cultural decay and stupidity/lack of self control

and a breakdown of the social shaming and ritual mechanisms to mitigate those, such as religious fasting period.

In a way, yes it is spiritual, but only as far as abandoning the religious practice of fasting and restrain by fear of mystical punishment by Someone Else.

It seems most people are too dumb to self-restrain without an exterior fear, hence why even as a non-believer, I recognise the value of Christianity.

People blaming muh processed high fructose should see the shit my poor grand-parents' generation ate without getting obese ( processed cakes, soda, processed grains, sugar, more grains, lard, salt, more salt, etc ). **They ate less tough** .

Nope

They put poison in the food. Our bodies are not adapt to dealing with so much high fructose corn syrup and chemical lab made artificial flavors and artificial sugars and artificially made preservatives. Your body tries to break down food and encounters chemical toxins and lab made fake sugar and shit and doesn't know how to filter it and get it through your system safely. Your liver, kidneys take damage. Your blood vessels and blood cells suffer cholesterol build up and get clogged like sewer pipes or water pipes pushing through poorly filtered water. Your thyroid glands and other glands are fucked with from all the hormones in the food and water and other chemicals.

All this probably leads to depression.

1. you eat poison and drink bottled water with anti-hormone blockers in it
2. you feel sick and tired and unwell
3. your sickness takes up your energy. you feel fatigue and sleepy
4. Everything else in your life suffers
5. You become depressed from not only feeling unwell, but everything else suffering as a result

let's assume this is correct

then people are unwilling to just not eat these foods, making them sickly, which would be a kind of choice

I acknowledge some of these factors but it doesn't seem like the whole picture

The medicine is poison too, asthma drugs can make you sick and will boost cortisol levels which causes weight gain, antibiotics kill skin, mouth, and gut flora which all play roles in obesity and cardiopulmonary health.

Not all of it, but it is gross that regulators have tolerated the cancer causing stuff so long.

I don't think gluttony is a fa tor in most cases, i think parents want their kids to have plenty and so serving sizes are just bloated from childhood, when you are over fed eating less makes you hungry more often and so the idea of over eating is not even considered, they think how can I over be practicing gluttony if eating less leaves me hungry. This is a fault of educators not explaining that is exactly how the physiology works.

Another prime factor is poor diet, most fat people have radically unhealthy "food" in their stomachs, pantries and fridges. The chief offenders are sugared drinks and junk food with high fructose corn syrup. But the sugar isn't the only issue many of the junkfoods and sweeteners have byproducts of modern agricultural techniques or poorly tested lab made fake sugars which cause other health problems that have effects on the cardiopulmonary system which make consumers less likely to want to suffer through exercise, and I mean suffer, a healthy person can easily enjoy a run but for a person with asthma or various dietary or pharmaceutical induced disorders on top of obesity and already weak cardiopulmonary health it is suffering, they genuinely need rehab and I don't mean billed rehab they need a guide to overcoming it step by step.

There is chain of causality and there aren't enough warning signs because society has embraced and normalized the poisons and healthy people who haven't been poisoned can't empathize and generally refuse to sympathize.

I know purity spiralers will be mad at me for giving leeway but most fat people didn't know they were doing anything they shouldn't anymore than anyone else and that is primarily the fault of ad men and the long standing efforts to normalize obesity in media. I place the obesity epidemic at the feet of regulators, agricultural and pharmaceutical companies, junk food manufacturers, the education system, the media and advertising industry and then the parents last. If one of those sounds out of place I can explain it.

I'll be clear that I do support portion control to treat obesity.
