I'm interested in how bacteria in the ocean break down all of the filth in those rivers as they reach the sea. In still water there would be an algae bloom. But when all of that hits the open ocean? What's the mechanism to purify it?

I think it is dilution, not purification that happens.

Some form of bacteria will feast upon anything. We've discovered plastic eating bacteria. So it should be feasible.
