I was in India for two weeks, some of the craziest stuff I've ever seen in my life. I was on a small row boat on the Ghanga river for instance, and saw that there are literally body parts floating around from dead people they partially cremated in fires on the river bank, and then down stream people washing their clothes. There is so much crap in the water it makes you sick to look at it. And this is their holy river (they worship demons afaic)

It's not unusual for strong rivers to be muddy. People used to call the Mississippi river The Big Muddy. But with the enormous amount of garbage and sewage Indians put in their rivers, they should call them The Big Shitty.

No, they look like floating garbage dumps.

Heavy rain and sometimes deforestation cause rivers to run brown due to sediment dirt.

Australian rivers run brown after a drought followed by heave downpours.

I'm interested in how bacteria in the ocean break down all of the filth in those rivers as they reach the sea. In still water there would be an algae bloom. But when all of that hits the open ocean? What's the mechanism to purify it?
