If all they are displaying are scalpels, you would assume that much of their medical knowledge was primitive.

Only after seeing the Pompeii display, did I learn that their battlefield medicine was pretty sophisticated. They were using anti-septics, alcohol and vinegar, for their medical procedures.

Modern medicine didn't start using antiseptics till the mid 1800s.

If you dig deeper, Ancient Greek and Roman doctors were performing complicated surgery. They performed mastectomies, and surgically removed kidney and bladder stones.
