During the Kumba-Melah (largest religious festival in the world), the trains running entirely across the nation are often two days late.
Sometimes, it's quicker to walk between cities than catch the train.
I've met many British, American and Australians tourists who ended up staying longer than expected in India because they ran out of money to afford to fly out again. All of them were fucked-up in various degrees, either physically (getting hit by a car, etc.) or mentally.
