It's not even a problem for them, their profit from soda is great even if it gets stolen often. They just want more money.
They have made people addicted so now they can start pulling away all the things that made them convenient and know the fat pigs will spend their last penny on a mc double even if it's just a window on a wall to order.

Counter point. Ive seen too many employees have to stop everything they are doing because some people trash the machines and now they have to clean it up because customers are complaining. When its more efficient to keep it behind the counter so they can keep it out of tge hands of people who, i swear to god, think they have to punch the handles as hard as physically possible to dispense ice or drink that they break off.
It also means they can swap the syrup when they notice it is getting low just by taking a second to open the cabinet rather than leaving the counter to go check it.
Theres benefits to doing this that arent just pure profit.
In my opinion employees aren't losing much time doing normal maintenance they would have to do, people have always been tough on those machines since day 1.
It's just par for the course, now the mc Donald's by me don't even have a dedicated order taker. I always walk in and have to wait for someone from the back to come take my order.
Mind you I only go once a month or so, so Theae changes could of happened sooner.

Going in to a new McDonald's nowadays is downright dystopian. I doordash on weekends and its creepy walking into one.
There's no real countertop where you would order. Just kiosks for ordering. The kitchen is tucked in around the corner where you have to lean over a barrier countertop and look around the corner to get the attention of anyone working there.
It's got place to pick up the slop when they cook it and bring it out. I hate it.
