Its not as much about the pedestrian, as the driver. When you are moving *with the grain* you have a better chance of reacting appropriately and so do they. Also, if you ARE hit *from behind* your legs bend in a natural way, scooping you up. Against the grain you are guaranteed permanent damage if not death.
