the whole idea is that you [as a man] are working to provide for a family during that time, you have dependents: wife/children. if you plan to just provide for yourself, you could work part time for very little with very little need.

I worked my ass off for five years and, by being frugal, I've been able to not work for the following five and personally raise my kids.

Why the fuck would I want to work while my kids are young? Plenty of time after they move out to focus on a career.
