For sure, make sure it is dead, not a single twitch before letting go. I also heard a thumb in the nostril works for them to let go. Luckily I grew up around dogs and I've only had to defend a couple of times.

Ass? Why have I heard about that lately? Everytime I hear about it it was that it didn't work. The only time I've ever gotten a dog to just let go I grabbed it's hind legs and lifted them to my chest hight and the dog just let go.

However in this situation that dog would be blind by the end of it.
