This was posted here last November, and I spent a good hour looking for the source. I'm sure it exists somewhere, but I couldn't find a PDF of the version of The Jewish Encyclopedia that it came from. Post again if you have better success than I do.

They tried. The South was too shit at combat to get a decisive battle, and so Britain and France couldn’t justify the expense and loss of face.
