Ammonia works even better. There are refrigerators that are nearly a hundred years old that are still running.

They convinced people that old refrigerators are inefficient. But, those old refrigerators just needed new door gaskets.

Ammonia is toxic. When those refrigerators fail they can blow out an entire neighborhood. R12 doesn't have this problem.

The safest refrigerant is CO2. Germany uses carbon dioxide refrigerant in domestic cars and refrigeration. But, I don't think they can export it to the US.

Germany switched away from Freon refrigerants because it's a potential health hazard.

R12 is relatively neutral in terms of pH. CO2 is not. I'd expect those systems to have less installation life and present all kinds of "odd" problems at the joints.
