There was NEVER a time in which "4D chess" was going on. 2D checkers comes closer to the level of strategy that is employed. We are talking about "do A, expect B to do C, leading to wanted result D" while B is predictable.

Also most people can't even play 2D chess. There are many different variations of 3D chess and it is conceptually difficult for most to learn or even enjoy playing. There is no 4D chess or 5D chess concepts that anyone has thought of that are easy for anyone to understand.
