In America the world "White" has always meant "of European ancestry", although I agree with you that identifying yourself as a European is a good thing, as every Caucasoid passes for White these days.

White Americans are on average over 98% European, with most of the 2% showing admixture having some extremely small amount below 1%. At that stage it's just as likely to have come from the original European stock rather than any kind of mutt effect in the states.

For a while in America only Europeans of Anglo-Celtic / Germanic stock were considered white, many old stock Americans hold this view to this day.

That's interesting, but disregarding census data and speaking of personal view, many Americans do hold this view, I've heard people lump Spaniards and Portuguese together with Mexican mestizos.

Depending to whom you ask, some people wouldn't consider some of those guys white, even if we exclude the ignorant Americans who can't tell he difference between Spain and South America, some people don't consider the average Iberians white because of the Moorish invasion. Same with Greeks and the Ottomans occupation. There are many Iberians/Italians/Greeks who look perfectly white but there are also many who are indistinguishable from Middle easterns/Turks, even when they don't decend from recent immigrants.
