Killing the guerrilla fighters yes. But the SS retaliated against the Jews of the area as a collective, including women and children. There are speeches of Himmler that explain why it's necessary *to kill the children* of our enemies.
I'll do some more research and maybe make a post about this to discuss, it would be interesting to explore how much of the holohoax is actually real.

4 millions is the estimate of how many Jews lived in the land that Germany conquered. Almost all of them would have either fled east as the Axis advanced, or blended in with the local population. And the Axis forces were certainly more preoccupied dealing with the Red Army rather than identifying Jews. The SS were trying to identify Bolshevik leaders first, not random kikes.
It's very difficult to say how many Jews the SS actually killed and how many they could have killed if they wanted to. It's very possible that they either killed or put in camps every Jew (man, woman, and child) that they put their hands on - I will do some research to see if I can confirm this.

But even if true, it was impossible for the average American to predict or understand that winning WWII would have led to the end of segregation. The two things seemed unrelated.
