Part of this mentality is that they don't understand relative costs.
Yes, their luxury items were expensive. They didn't have microwaves or VCRs. Boo hoo, because at the same time their housing, energy, and fuel was less than half what we pay, relatively. So this dingus is whining about not owning a computer while owning a house, which is completely out of reach for most Millenials.
I can build a perfectly servicable PC for $2000. That's two months rent. In the 80s, it would cost around the same, but that would be a years rent so, obviously, it's a bad idea to buy a computer, especially if you don't actually need it to get a job. Even if he understood that, do you think he would understand that being able to afford cheap "luxury" goods but not a house is worse than having a house without luxury goods?

I agree 100% with you that inflation is something that needs to be considered, as well as the relative cost. College tuition, cars, healthcare, and housing are more expensive now than ever, and salaries have lost purchasing power every year, although you lost me with the $2,000 PC built that most people will never need, not the best example.

I think he was just showing how ridiculous it is with the PC as part of the example. 2Gs can build a ridiculous PC that will play most games very competently at 1080p 60fps, and even more depending on game, but you can build something for just basic bitch shit, and light occasional gaming $750-$1k no problem. There are very few places that you can still rent for said prices unless you’re talking about maybe renting one room somewhere, or renting a house with three to four other people.
