Dubbed as the "Asian Francis", he is often seen as a representative of the Catholic Church's progressive wing. Tagle has criticized the Catholic Church for using "harsh words" to describe LGBTQ people as well as divorced and remarried Catholics, who he believes should be allowed to receive Holy Communion on a case-by-case basis. Tagle is one of several prelates considered possible candidates to be elected pope in the period leading up to and following Francis' death on April 21, 2025.
