I think we can do both, have the bunny and have the cross. The key is to maybe tie things with easter bunnies with kids, to more serious subjects or symbols like a crucifix or Jesus' Passion.
Literal rabbits and other wildlife might become more active in spring, as a symbol of new life. Jesus' Resurrection is like the new life of springtime. The symbol of new physical life (bunny), being tied to new spiritual life (the resurrection cross with the cloth draped on it)
Maybe Lent and Advent could be made to be more "dark" of seasons, even for kids though. I'm aware of some older versions of Grimm's fairy tales which have dark themes (not sure if they were even intended for kids).
