Aside from /u/Shivananda rather succinct reply, the ancient's figured this out largely because:
* all other celestial objects were round, and
* the discovery that noon in one area wasn't noon in another led to the earliest suggestion of what we now call time zones, and ultimately to calculating the circumference of the Earth in Eratosthenes' famous experiment, and
* the idea that celestial objects were just 'lights' in firmament was put to bed with the invention of the telescope, where we could see the objects (gods, now called planets) rotate periodically (and thus we could determine the length of Venus/Saturn/etc's day).
