It’s terribly annoying. If I don’t use a special typeface JUST for this symbol (✡ <– should be the correct one) in my book, when I open it on a tablet or phone IT SHOWS THE GODDAMNED EMOJI INSTEAD OF THE REAL CHARACTER, DESPITE SHOWING THE REAL CHARACTER ON MY DESKTOP AS I’M WRITING IT.

Even Craig Federighi, years ago, said on stage that emoji was going to be the death of communication.

That sucks, how about the unicode variation selector? By adding U+FE0E right after the symbol, it should force it to render as text.

Any difference between these: ✡︎ ✡

I see them both the same (non-emoji) on my desktop, and…

…different on my tablet. The second one renders as emoji. So yep, that’ll do it. Weird, though, because my desktop OS automatically prefers the standard character ✡︎ but *will* render the emoji if asked ✡️.

Might be some default setting somewhere hidden in the system. Good to see that it works tho, U+FE0E directly after will force text, and U+FE0F can be used to force emoji.

LinageOS seems to prefer the text version, just like most desktop OS.

Pain in the ass, but you could always just keep a legend open in wordpad, copy and paste.

Macro keys would also work I think, just so you don't have to type the damn thing in every time.

I have three parentheses set to autocorrect to the character across my whole OS, so I just type the echoes and they become the star. I do that for a lot of things; it’s just that my tablet defaults to the emoji unless I force it to render in a typeface that doesn’t have an equivalent. Que sera.
