jews claim that most people in the middle ages were illiterate (but ignore this is because you were only considered literate by the Church if you were a polyglot capable of reading and writing in latin, most peasants could definitely read, and probably write if they had access to something to write on), and yet have created a society where half the population is *actually* illiterate.
