Nope, I can confirm my personal experience. When I was a kid, we never had sugar and I never had cavities, despite never brushing my teeth (neglectful parents, rather than health nuts).
When I started eating sugar, I started getting cavities. In response, I started brushing daily and flossing but still got more cavities than when I was young.
