Seems like it. There must be a bigger, nefarious, goal to it though. I mean even advertisers would realise their commercials don't reach anyone - so why bother advertising.

They don't realize that their business model is fucked, centralized expensive servers offering "free" services, making the user the product while spamming them with annoying ads is no longer what most people want. Open source software providers better free and ad-free alternatives. Blockchains as well as new ARM and AMD clouds offer much cheaper hosting for alternative services and various cryptocurrencies makes it easier to fund free services without annoying ads or having to steal users data, it's just easy and convenient to pay without schlomo the middleman taking a huge cut or dictating who can buy what.
