They invented hanukkah to take their minds off it, too. And don't forget, it was way more than "half" of the people. A vast majority of the people of the time correctly saw Jesus for what He was. It even says in the Gospel of John specifically that the pharisees attacked Jesus not on theological grounds but simply because the people were listening to Him now and not them. Really the only people who opposed Jesus *were* the pharisee/sadducee classes, and their immediate followers. They were quite good at manipulating the rest of the common people though, as kikes usually are.
