The last true Volkswagen "people's car" was the Mk2 Golf. Everything after that point became too entrenched in OBD garbage.

If cars followed the plane industry and basically stopped developing after 1990, the world would be a much better place.

hah.

come down to the avionics bay with me sometime.

it's an entirely different world. different technologies. different strategies. different power distribution requirements. the engine systems alone are completely insane, and the number of sub computers that feed data into the FMS is outrageous.

plus.. they're getting digital messaging to ATC now.. and that feeds into the FMS and the pilot management desktop computer.

we used to weight fuel into these fuckers. now the plane has a fuel management computer. you just hook up, turn on the pump, and it handles the rest.

Cockpit-wise, yes. But the overwhelming exterior design of a modern jet hasn't changed at all since 1981's Boeing 767. We don't build tri-motor planes like the L1011 anymore and only use 4 engines in the biggest jumbos. The biggest development in those 40 years have been winglets/sharklets, and Airbus' "Zorro" mask. The bucket style thrust reversers that caused LDA004 are also long phased out.

Every plane that has come out since 2000 looks 90% the same as the one it replaced. Any attempt at evolving past that and introducing a completely brand new design (i.e. the Sonic Cruiser) invariably gets shot down.

The the outside of a plane and the outside of a car are the same. They are physics derived and window dressing. Cars haven't changed much either exterior wise. 4 doors. 4 wheels. Box shaped.
