Maybe, I dont know how much the two major branches of Islam differ, but I think the disagreement is mainly over Mohammed's successor.
Sunnis believe that the successor should be chosen by vote of an assembly, shiites believe that the successor should be a descendant of Mohammad.
It's simple. The great schism is such a clusterfuck that there's still inquiry into how the hell this happened 1000 years later. Chief reason given is the filioque. That is far from the only reason, just the straw that broke the camels back. There are dozens if not hundreds of reasons why the great schism happened.
It can be summed up as follows:
Islam schism: succession issues
Great schism: 1000 years of slight theological differences between eastern and western catholicism snowballing into creating 2 completely different sects
Reformation: the western catholic church pissed a bunch of people off
