As far as I can tell, the principle of the place is "Juche" or self-reliance and independence. Not a bad goal.
The fact that life is hard up there has always been true. North Korea has made things significantly better than it was during the Chosun dynasty.
And in all honesty, on the grand scale of leaders throughout history, all of the leaders of North Korea don't rate very poorly. Significantly better, in fact, than probably half of European leaders throughout history.
