that shape helps reduce bow wave effect by destructive interference - creates a wave 180 out of phase with the bow wave (slightly ahead of bow wave). bow waves rise up the side of the bow and 'pulls' on the hull, slowing the ship. so this shape is actually faster/lower power.
I remember when I was a young seaman in the early 80s I was talking to some old boatswain with 18 years service. He said that in 30 years ships would be unrecognizable to us due to new materials and new technologies. I thought that was incomprehensible because there's only so much you can do with a ship to maintain its integrity and usefulness while fulfilling its mission.
Well, that 40 years ago, and I stand corrected. There is so much stuff I can't find on that ship.
- Bridge wings
- Signal shack
- Flag staffs and yardarms
- Ship handling equipment: Rope, capstans, anchors, bullseye, etc.
- Guard rails
There are some tiny windows for the bridge crew, and there's a place behind the superstructure for flying colors while underway. I think those things on the fo'c'sle are gun turrets, but it's hard to say.
I don't understand the point of making the ship nearly invisible to radar. The large militaries of the world use various tracking and positioning systems and are aware at every moment where literally every ship is on the surface of the earth. I think that goal of making a ship invisible to radar was accomplished much too late and has been overcome by new technologies.
