is what you tell kids. Apples grown from seed usually taste terrible. All the ones you can buy are grafted from ones that proved edible.

In reality such apples are used to brew alcoholic cider.

You can take sour apples and make all sorts of things from it. Cider was a way to break down the longer starches and such and make it edible.

I remember reading somewhere that Johnny Appleseed's true story was that he was planting apples for making cider, not feeding people.

cider is a very nutritious drink that can be stored for a long period of time. America ran on alcohol back then, but in that alcohol were all sorts of vitamins and nutrients that would keep you alive through a long winter.

Cider is also about the easiest alcohol to make. Much simpler than beer or growing grapes for wine.
