Johnny Appleseed was an amazing person. He was planting apples so that future settlers would find food to feed their families.

John Henry was a nigger.

> would find food to feed their families

is what you tell kids. Apples grown from seed usually taste terrible. All the ones you can buy are grafted from ones that proved edible.

In reality such apples are used to brew alcoholic cider.

Makes sense. Thirty Five years to find out why my seed-grown apple tree I planted didn't work out.

but also crazy that all the Golden Delicious / Pink Lady / Gala / Jonagold apples come from the same tree, split and grafted forever

You can take sour apples and make all sorts of things from it. Cider was a way to break down the longer starches and such and make it edible.

John Henry was a good man and represented the average Joe against corporate innovation.

I remember reading somewhere that Johnny Appleseed's true story was that he was planting apples for making cider, not feeding people.

cider is a very nutritious drink that can be stored for a long period of time. America ran on alcohol back then, but in that alcohol were all sorts of vitamins and nutrients that would keep you alive through a long winter.

Cider is also about the easiest alcohol to make. Much simpler than beer or growing grapes for wine.

Sam Houston. Man went from being a drunkard and a loser to leading Texas patriots against the beaners and winning.

Pecos Bill. He lassoed a tornado.

Wyatt Earp married jewess. Sad really.

Captain Stormalong. Wild Bill. Jesse James.

Sometimes I get Paul Bunyan and John Bunyan mixed up and have to remember which one had the big blue ox and which one wrote *Pilgrim's Progress*.

John Bunyan wrote *Pilgrim's Progress*. It was the 2nd best selling book (apart from the Bible) until the mid-twentieth century and many Christians have benefited from it. Since it's so old, it's in the public domain.

I find the reality of Johnny Appleseed to be much more interesting than the folktales. At the time land was being given away by the government to people, but the people had to prove they were actually living on the land and improving it, not just holding it to sell later. One of the ways you could prove you were improving the land was by starting an orchard, as orchards require maintenance. So what Johhny Appleseed did was he would go to unclaimed land, start an orchard, and the new owners that came later would pay him for the headstart on their homestead.

As others have said, he was starting apples from seed, and apples started from seed are always hybrids and don't necessarily taste like the apple the seed came from. Most eating apples we know today are considered sweet, while cider apples are considered sweet, sharp, bitter or bitter-sharp. I have a number of cider trees on my property that are so bitter or sharp that they are inedible, but make fantastic cider. Most apple trees started from seed make good cider, and cider would have been a primary function of a orchard in Johnny Appleseed's day.

Also, swap out John Henry for Daniel Boone and the meme is perfect.

It's my side gig goal. To be the teller of American tales at community events. To bring these legends along kicking and screaming if I have to.
