One of the first 12 bishops literally sold Him out to be killed, and the Pope denied Him 3 times during His trial. During the Arian Crisis, over half of self-proclaimed Christians were open heretics, thats pretty subverted if you ask me. Of course, the Church still survived both, but there will always be trials to test people's faith.
