According to Hitler the war went well in the beginning, and indeed the Germans went up to Stalingrad as proof. The problem was that 1. the Soviets received continuous support from the good ol' Americans, and 2. Germany was attacked from the West and had to split forces. And the Allies were busy "demoralizing" these evil Nazis by killing a LOT of civilians in Dresden by dropping various types of bombs so that civilian killings were maximized. And 3. the Germans should have pulled out, but it was probably too late, as the involvement in the war against the Soviets was too much to show up with insufficient results... and also considering things like morale.
