WASRs used to be cheap and were a go-to option like 10-15 years ago but now they're around $650-$700 new when you can get a decent AR for around $400-$450 (even cheaper if you buy parts on sale) which will be a better more modular gun overall, plus Russian ammo drying up has driven up the price of 7.62x39 (it's around the same as .223/5.56 now but I wouldn't expect it to stay that way). Wouldn't recommend a PTR-91 either at the moment; they used to be a nice affordable entry into battle rifles but a decent AR-10 can be had for around $700-$800 where even a base model PTR is around $1,200 - $1,300 now. Also definitely wouldn't recommend a 7.62x39 AR as they almost all have feeding issues.
What I'm saying is that you need to step up from lower calibers at this point.
Standard 5.56 is fine for soft targets/non armored. If your enemies are anything more than a roving pack of ferals, you'll want something with more penetration and stopping power.

You're paying for the roller delayed blowback, which I would prefer on a battle rifle in all honesty.
I'm actually surprised you can get AR-10's for that cheap. I haven't been shopping in a long while, just ammo replenishment. I'd personally rather save up the extra cash for a PTR, but if you're at your limit and want to put something in your hands, it's infinitely better than having nothing.

Just jump up in caliber, regardless of platform.
