What it seems to me is it was probably edited to fit in with the Christian Endtimes (not by Snorri, but by the one who wrote what he was copying), this was a fairly common thing.

Which is weird because it doesnt much benefit Christians to edit Pagan theology to match Christian theology as it would be of more interest for Christian editors to make it look worse than it was if they were deceptively editing it.

It’s the same thing as adapting Holidays, makes it easier to convert people when you keep some traditions intact.
