ORIGINAL EDITION. Koestler advances the thesis that Ashkenazi Jews are not descended from the historical Israelites of antiquity, but from Khazars, a Turkic people originating in and populating an empire north of and between the Black Sea and Caspian Sea. Koestler's hypothesis is that the Khazars - who converted to Judaism in the 8th century - migrated westwards into current Eastern Europe (primarily Ukraine, Poland, Belarus, Lithuania, Hungary and Germany) in the 12th and 13th centuries when the Khazar Empire was collapsing.

Ashkenaz was a grandson of Noah's son Japheth, so it's odd they're claiming descent from Shem.

From what I have read they came about from the Roman empire. The ashkenazis have close DNA with certain Italians. After the collapse of Roman empire they moved westward to England which famously had the Jewish expulsion around 1200s. They moved onto France which expelled them shortly after around 1400s. Then they moved to eastern Europe where they repopulated for centuries.

I read similar things. I’m of the belief that those were smaller groups that were fractured later on after this occurred.

I believe that some of this happened and/pr started during the babylonian captivity.
