Most of the censers in churches are brass.
Much of what is in most churches is not gold. Typically gold is reserved for the paten and the chalice. The cost isn't in the materials but in the niche market.
Edit: also.... you said it wasnt about the incense but belief? Try explaining that to Nadab and Abihu.
There have been solid gold censers, I was using two extremes for dramatic effect.
Yes, it is about belief. Ritual brings man closer to God, it does not bring God closer to man. Man becoming closer to God brings God closer to man. A heathen does not become more righteous because he burns the same incense in his vain beliefs. A Christian does not please God more or less because he physically burns the incense in a certain way or other, God is pleased because the incense was burnt in faith.
These things interact with our humanity. The chalice is holy because we have decided it to be holy, therefore it invokes a perception of higher worth than pine board. But God has made both the pine and the chalice, and he has made the incense, and the man who burns it. What has God gained?
Abide in faith, hope and charity. The greatest of these is charity.
