There's a term for this: The Tragedy of the Commons.
There were/are enough resources for everyone, youtube could have stayed the same it was 10 years ago. Technical wise, youtube right now is the best it has ever been.
It's pandering to the commons and youtube taking advantage of it's monopoly power and pushing it's own agenda

You're looking at the wrong metric. HUMAN ATTENTION is the finite resource. If I have to sort through gigaquads of shit to get to the 1kb of good information, then that is the issue.
Youtube and other platforms turned to shit because they intentionally allow you to see exactly 0 kb of information of the stuff they don't want you to see.
All the delicate topics are not banned because more people are joining. The vast majority of people would give 0 fucks about "controversial content".
"Controversial content" is banned solely because the people in charge wanted it banned.
All the faggot content for example is not made by the majority of people, it's a small minority doing it and being pushed in front by the owners.
Back in the 80's, only university researchers had access to the internet and they created a set of social norms or "nettiquette" that they lived by. Every September, a bunch of new students would get access and mess up the nettiquette. Eventually they would adapt or get bored of being picked on and leave.
Once ISPs came along and brought the net to everybody there was a constant stream of new users, creating an eternal September.
We're constantly lowering the bar, back in the 90's you at least had to pay for dial-up which made every kB of transferred data precious so people were less likely to waste it. Then came broadband which made people dump anything on the internet like a big truck.
Then came the iPhone and other smartphones which dumbed down the internet to the point where even a nigger could use it.
Then the internet became available to any Pajeet or Brazilian or Nigerian, dumbing things down even further.
Now we have AI bots generating dead content. The cycle continues.
