No, the myth is that he was the only person who thought the earth was round.
His actual proposal to the king and queen was that China was much closer to Europe than people thought.
He was wrong, of course. You'd have to sail farther than your ship could carry food and water to get to China. But thankfully there was an entire continent that people didn't know about in between.
