Calling the modern countries "democracies" is like calling a certain liquid "safe and effective" – it's a nice marketing stunt, but it has nothing to do with reality.
The real, Athenian democracy was a good system. With approximately 10% of the society making decisions, it was the perfect mix between oligarchy (1%) and idiocracy (100%). And you could always exile the politicians working against the society's interest.
It's tragic that there are no truly democratic countries in the world today. The word is being twisted by the usual suspects.
