The literal dictionary definition of a 'holocaust' is a burnt offering. It's telling that some of the earliest fable-writers only mentioned literal burning methods (bodies thrown into fire pits, holocoaster carts tipping jews into giant furnaces, etc.) - no gas chambers.

You can find this used in the original dictionary sense in various sources before the holohoax era, including [some early English Bible translations](https://biblescan.com/search.php?q=holocaust).
