The same thing goes for electronics. In the right application, they're awesome. When chainsaw manufacturers started replacing points with solid state ignition, people hated that electronic crap. Now, no one would even consider making a points conversion kit for a chainsaw because that is rarely what causes a small engine to fail.
Washing machines have gears in the transmission that are made of plastic. Sometimes the gear will get destroyed and the entire washing machine stops working. Then a tech comes out and has to replace the gear and people get mad because it's plastic.
In reality the plastic gear is there so that if there's a problem the gear will disintegrate and relieve the load on the transmission before the transmission fries, saving you from replacing a part that costs almost what a new washing machine costs.
