It's not hard at all, get a little flux core welder and make sure you use a respirator and welding mask and you're good.

Expect to make ugly welds at first, so start on scrap metal that's pretty flat and try to focus on making a straight even weld bead that doesn't make too much in the way of spatter. Once you can do that, look up charts for varying thicknesses and the settings to use and start trying to weld bits of steel together. Mild steel is easier to weld, dont try aluminum until you're very comfortable welding in general.

I've never done aluminum welding, but I've seen it done and it's hard as hell to do it right, from what I hear.
