It went beyond greed. It was extremely weird behavior from a CEO of a social media company. He told the users about the policy change only 2 days before implementing it. He didn't ask the community for their thoughts, which many tried to do in the short time frame before implementation. Better ideas were offered, and all were ignored (hilariously, one of the more popular ideas, to limit media uploads for non players, was eventually enacted, but not before gutting more than half of the userbase). Torba insulted his userbase as freeloaders, and reposted others saying far worse. His excuse that it was because storage space was expensive didn't make sense, as storage space is the cheapest it's ever been, and every month Gab's fundraising goals were always met. Torba and other Gab employees were asked what the fundraising goals were funding, if they still couldn't afford storage space, or why Torba was claiming one thing when the site was telling us another. We got zero answers. I used to shill for Gab, but now I actively distrust Torba.
