We know this for a fact, as France was conquered and the French people didn't have to speak German. In fact, they were left alone in their own country (Vichy France) with Germany occupying only the land that was needed to fight Britain.
There was literally no repercussions for France surrendering to the Germans.
I've neeb reading this book *The Unknown Warriors* by Nicholas Pringle which is a collection of letters from British WWII veterans 2006-2012 where they talk about their experiences during and after the war, and how they feel about the state their country is in.
TL;DR: disappointment.
